It’s “ruffed” not ruffled grouse. The easiest way to get birds on your land is to buy them. You can buy adult birds or independent ******. With adult birds, you want to get 10 hens per rooster to start with no less than 33 birds. You need a decent amount because of normal attrition from predation or disease. This will give you a good base to work from. Are there other birds in your area? If not, you’re going to be in it for the long haul cause not only will you be stocking your own property, but all the property around you. In a couple of years with good weather, there’ll be plenty of birds to hunt.

I don’t know much about grouse, but with quail, it is a good idea to plant food crops to ensure they have a steady supply of food.

Grouse might like other types of food, but quail are very fond of lespedeza peas. Just plant them, or whatever grouse like to eat and leave them for the birds.

If necessary, it might be a good idea to provide some cover for them to nest or shelter in. Quail seem to like to congregate around thickets, and large brush piles.

I usually go to them instead of trying to draw them to me . I hunt old stands of wild grapes in the mountains that seems to be a favorite food of theirs

it has been my experience that grouse prefer areas near running water, evergreen trees and small clearings. If you have a small stream or brook, plant some evergreens around the area. Of course, if there is no food source available, the grouse won’t show up. Grouse like to eat soft fruits, bugs, acorns, buds, leaves, and ferns. If there are no grouse in your surrounding areas, you may have to buy some immature ones and set them loose on your land. But they will not stay if you do not provide proper habitat.
